The Great Shaving Cream Debate

Kids LOVE to play with shaving cream! However, to many it sounds scary because of the potential mess. Fear not! Here are our tips for playing with shaving cream indoors so you get the most out of the experience without all of the mess. Say yes to shaving cream!

Shaving Cream Tips:

  1. Lay down a cheap plastic tablecloth where you will be working that you can throw out when finished. You can lay it on the table you are working at or even on the floor around your child’s workspace.IMG_1419good
  2. Keep the shaving cream contained! Put the shaving cream in one of those clear Sterilite containers, a 9×12 baking pan, disposable foil baking pan, the sink, bathtub, or other LARGE container or tray. You can even put it in a large Ziploc bag for the little ones who want to play!
  3. Buy a scent your whole family will love. After playing with shaving cream, the scent will linger!
  4. Less really does = more! Give your child small amounts of the shaving cream at a time to play with. It will evaporate as they play and you can give them more as they go.
  5. Have some fun tools ready for play – old toothbrushes, plastic silverware, play-doh tools, craft jewels, magnet letters, beads or small toys (fun for playing treasure hunt in the shaving cream!)P1240388good
  6. Have a beach towel or baby wipes nearby so that when your children are finished, you can wipe their hands and arms off right away BEFORE the head to the sink.
  7. Remember its only shaving cream and it won’t stain!
  8. Get creative! Your children can practice writing their names, letters or numbers in the shaving cream with their fingers. Add some color to your shaving cream with a squirt of washable paint! I don’t’ recommend food coloring because it will stain your child’s hands.

Now you are ready for some shaving cream fun without the worry of a huge mess!

Classroom Use:

Shaving Cream doesn’t have to be just for the home! It can be used in the classroom as well. IMG_1165good

Math: Shaving cream is a great way to make math fun! You can work on fact fluency by having your students answer a verbal equation by writing the number in shaving cream. Then they can wipe it off and answer the next question.  It is a great way to work on speed and accuracy while having a lot of fun and making it a tactile experience.

Literacy: Shaving cream can be used as a great tool for name writing and letter writing practice. Students can also practice writing sight words in the shaving cream.

Outside Messy Fun:

For those who don’t’ mind the mess take the shaving cream outside! You can fill a plastic pool or sandbox with shaving cream or put it on a large tarp. Let your students get right into it and explore! 10524579_867192273308373_1536000398323172675_ogood

At Stutelage, kids had a blast over the summer playing with shaving cream at our popular Frozen summer camp! We had a “summer snow day” and the campers each got to squirt a bottle of shaving cream on the “ice” (large blue tarp). They loved to squirt it themselves! They also got to slip and slide in it and make snow angels. It was an easy clean up with just a quick hose off. Check out the Stutelage Innovations Facebook page for more pictures of all the fun they had the Frozen Camp! Frozen Summer Camp Facebook Pictures
