How to Prepare Your Child for the Back-to-School Transition

The end of summer is an exciting time filled with new beginnings, but it can also bring anxiety and challenges for children adjusting to a new school year. The transition from a relaxed summer routine to structured school days can be tough, but with a little preparation, you can help set your child up for success.

1. Ease Into a Routine

A week or two before school starts, begin adjusting your child’s bedtime and morning routines. Gradually shifting sleep schedules will make the first week of school much smoother.

2. Encourage Independence

Help your child practice skills they’ll need for the school day, such as packing their lunch, organizing their backpack, and selecting their clothes the night before. These small steps build confidence and reduce morning stress.

3. Talk About Feelings

Back-to-school jitters are normal! Create an open space for your child to express excitement, nervousness, or concerns. Reading books about starting school or visiting the classroom in advance (if possible) can help ease worries.

4. Make Learning Fun Again

The summer slide is real, but getting back into an educational mindset doesn’t have to feel like work. Start incorporating fun, hands-on learning activities like puzzles, journaling, or even math games at dinner.

5. Sign Up for a Structured Activity

One of the best ways to help your child transition back into a school routine is by enrolling them in a structured activity during the final weeks of summer. Many camps shut down before that last week of break, leaving families scrambling for engaging options. Stutelage is one of the few programs that offers camp all the way until school starts, providing a fun and structured way for kids to re-establish routines, socialize, and get back into the habit of following a schedule.

We are one of the few camps in the area still open next week! Since spots for that last week of camp fill up quickly, it’s important to register early to ensure your child can take advantage of this opportunity.
