What To Pack For A Healthy, Nut-Free Camp Lunch

When your child is staying for a full day at camp, lunch becomes a big part of keeping them energized, focused, and ready to enjoy every activity. At Stutelage, we want lunchtime to be simple, safe, and stress-free—for both campers and parents.

This guide will help you pack a healthy, nut-free lunch that your child can easily manage on their own.

What Makes A Great Camp Lunch?

A well-packed lunch should be:

Balanced – Includes protein, carbs, and healthy fats
Nut-Free – Keeps all campers safe
Easy To Open – Promotes independence and saves time
Quick To Eat – So kids can enjoy their break without feeling rushed

A Simple Formula For Packing Lunch

Not sure what to pack? Think of lunch as a combination of 3–4 components:

1. Main Item (Protein + Carbs)

Choose something filling and easy to eat:

  • Turkey or ham sandwich on whole wheat bread
  • Sunbutter & jelly sandwich (see note below)
  • Pasta salad with grilled chicken
  • Cheese and cracker “Lunchable-style” box
  • Mini bagel with cream cheese and turkey
  • Quesadilla slices

2. Fruits & Vegetables

Add color and nutrients:

  • Apple slices or grapes
  • Strawberries or blueberries
  • Baby carrots or cucumber slices
  • Bell pepper strips
  • Snap peas

3. Side Or Snack

Something extra to round it out:

  • Pretzels or whole grain crackers
  • Popcorn
  • Yogurt pouch
  • String cheese

4. Drink

Send a refillable water bottle to keep your child hydrated throughout the day.

Important Nut-Free Reminder

Stutelage is a nut-free facility to protect campers with allergies.

If you are packing a nut alternative such as sunbutter, please include a small note or label on the item indicating that it is nut-free.

This helps our staff supervising lunch quickly identify safe foods and ensures a smooth and safe lunchtime for everyone.

Choose Easy-To-Open Containers

To help your child feel confident and independent:

  • Avoid overly tight lids or complicated containers
  • Practice opening everything at home before camp
  • Pre-open wrappers when possible
  • Use simple, sectioned lunch containers

Keep Lunch Fresh And Safe

  • Use an insulated lunchbox with at least one ice pack
  • Keep cold foods cold (especially dairy and meats)
  • Avoid foods that may spoil quickly in the heat

Separate Snacks From Lunch Food

Campers who are staying for a full day have a snack in the AM camp and a snack in the PM camp, so it is important that campers know which food items are meant for which times. To help,

  • Tell your child what items are for their AM and PM snacks
  • Consider packing snacks in the backpack and lunch in the lunchbox
  • Label items as AM SNACK and PM SNACK so your child knows what food to grab when.

Label All Items With First And Last Names

It is easy for campers to accidentally leave an item behind which is why having ALL items labeled with the child’s first and last name really helps us to get lost items back to their owners. Please label the following items with first AND last names:

  • Lunchboxes
  • Containers
  • Reusable packaging
  • Cloth napkins
  • Ice packs
  • Anything else that is packed for lunch that should be returned
