At our Hunger Games: Catching Fire summer camp, each camper wrote a letter to a character from the book that they chose at random.  Campers were asked to write as if they could actually send this letter to the character in the book.  Below are some of the letters written by this year’s campers.  Enjoy!

Dear Rue,

I really wish that you didn’t die.  You and Prim could have been such awesome friends.  The Capitol was so cruel to have a girl that is my age die.  I bet Katniss wishes you were still here to experience the casualties of life now.  You probably would be such a great role model for Willow and Rye (Katniss and Peeta’s children).  You were also so clever to show Katniss that tracker jacker nest.  Without you, she may have never survived that morning.  Also, if you weren’t her ally, Thresh would have killed Katniss or Clove may have killed Katniss.  Rue, you may not realize it, but you were a true hero till the end.

Love,

Serena

Dear Peeta,

I hope you and Katniss are doing well with Willow and Rye.  Thankfully the Hunger Games are over.  I live in district 13 with my three brothers and two sisters.  I think you did great in the Hunger Games.  It was a bad choice to make an alliance with districts 1 and 2 though.  Was it a fake alliance?  Are you sad that your family died from getting exposed by President Snow?  I would really like to know.  Finally, I hope everything is good that is going on in your life!

Love,

Lianna

Dear President Snow,

First of all, you are a wicked man!  Why are you so mean?  The idea of the Hunger Games is cold-hearted and terrible.  You’re killing 23 people each year, and for what?  That’s right, nothing!  Absolutely nothing.

Another thing is the avoxes.  Being able to talk is a right.  This is the exact opposite thing that you’re supposed to do.  That’s what people did millenniums ago.  You’re supposed to learn from your past, not throw it in the gutter.  I wish Katniss killed you the moment she met you.

You have no strength – physically or mentally.  You make the citizens of the Capitol and the career districts think that everything is fine, and you cover it up with a load of fakeness.  Only the citizens of the seam know the real story and what the Hunger Games really is.  You make people starve in the seam, risking their lives to get food.  This is horrible.  EVERYTHING is horrible.  Grow a heart!

Your #1 Anti-Fan,

Maddie

Dear Katniss,

I think you would’ve been way better with Gale.  Peeta is not for you.

Anyways, we need to talk about the Hunger Games.  You should’ve just put the night lock at the cornucopia.  Everyone would have taken it.  You also could have saved Rue by leaving as soon as possible.  You also should have stabbed Peeta!  He didn’t do anything.  He just distracted you and almost killed you.

There are some things I do like, such as your use of the bow and arrow, though I would have added a dagger into the mix.  I also like how you lived in a cave near the river and in the trees.

What was it like living in a penthouse for a week?  You were right about hurting Peeta, but you should have been nicer to the avoxes.  The poor things with their tongues cut clean off.

I think you made some good choices, but mostly bad.

From,

Annalise

Dear Primrose,

I’m very sorry that your father died in that terrible accident.  You were so strong to help your mother when Katniss went into the Hunger Games.  When you became a nurse in district 13, you were so brave.  You helped your mother so much and you were a very reliable source for help.

I’m so happy that you believed in your sister to win the Hunger Games.  How did you feel when Katniss volunteered at tribute for you when you were chosen?  How did you feel when Katniss had to go into the Hunger Games for the second time?  I thought it was terrible that the Capitol blew up district 12 and you guys had to move to district 13.  Did you like it in district 13?

I’m so sorry that you had to die.  You were too young and had a long life ahead of you.  You were a beautiful young lady and I wish you didn’t have to go through those terrible things.

Love,

Veronica
